Service Learning

Age-appropriate Opportunities for Service, Missions, and Personal Growth are Integral to the Academy’s School Program.

The elementary program provides ample opportunities for the students to grow personally and spiritually through service and missions projects by participating in at least one serving-learning project annually. The project is incorporated within the curriculum, is age appropriate and cultivates our mission: Building Integrity and Modeling Service.

Students enjoy either visiting the organization or having a representative from the organization visit the school campus. Service projects include:

  • The annual collecting and packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child
  • Collecting food and non-perishable items for the CenterPoint food pantry;
  • Overseeing the recycling program for the Academy school;
  • Working with the Salvation Army in collecting hats, mittens, gloves and blankets for the poor, as well as partnering with Rise Again Ministries in providing items for the homeless;
  • Making Christmas gifts and presenting special concerts, playing board games or visiting with the residents of Havenwood Heritage Heights;
  • Collecting items for high school students to take with them on the annual international mission trip.

Middle School

The middle school program provides service, missions, and personal growth opportunities for its students that continue to encourage compassion and development of leadership skills for the building of God’s kingdom.

Students have participated in community and international service projects:

The sixth grade oversees Operation Christmas Child for the secondary students and assists with writing the puppet skit material for a quarterly elementary chapel.

The 7th and 8th grade classes have worked together on a number of initiatives: hosting a walk-a-thon supporting diabetes research (they raised over $2,000 for the project); writing, illustrating, and reading their stories to Pre-K and Kindergarten; and helping local area organizations with spring clean up.

The middle school works in community with the elementary school in collecting food and clothing items for the poor and participating in the school recycling program. They also support the high school mission’s trip by donating supplies and by preparing craft items to assist in the teaching time.

Students develop a servant’s heart by rotating classroom clean-up duties, setting up and stacking chairs in the Great Room, planning and preparing for the monthly social specials, tutoring elementary children after school, assisting with the morning and afternoon Quest program, and participating in the Academy after school cleaning crew.

Throughout the years various students in middle school and upper elementary grades have served as reading buddies to lower elementary students. This has served to model fluent reading and foster positive relationships with the younger students. Students are encouraged to develop a greater sense of responsibility by assisting in class and school fundraisers.

High School

The high school program offers many opportunities for the students to minister to and serve both the school and community.

High school students have the opportunities to serve through:

Involvement in the leading of worship during weekly Chapel by being part of the Worship Team and by sharing testimonies about mission’s trips and service learning projects, as well as student led chapels accompanying senior projects.

Fundraising for their individual classes, but also assist in a variety of capacities in school-wide fundraisers, such as the annual School Auction.

As greeters during special school functions such as Open Houses, Grandparents’ Day, alumni events, and concerts.

Student leadership planning and preparation of community building activities and service projects.

Maintaining the facility and grounds through vacuuming, sweeping, mopping floors, spray washing doors and tables, emptying trash, weeding flower beds, and assisting with snow removal.

Peer tutoring and morning/afternoon quest assistance.
