Destination Imagination is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization run by New Hampshire’s Incredible Creativity Connection (NHICC). Its purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Approximately 200,000 youth in grades K-12 make friends and learn the creative process through DI programs every year, and are supported by nearly 40,000 volunteers.
Destination Imagination® is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. The participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams showcase their solutions at tournaments all over the world.
Destination Imagination’s programs are developed annually to ensure they are relevant and align to National Education Standards, STEM standards, ELA Common Core Standards, and Mathematics Common Core Standards. Every year, with the help of parent volunteers, educators, and subject matter experts, DI designs new and exciting Challenges for student teams to solve with no adult assistance.
Here at CCA, students choose one of seven challenges and meet during the school year. During these meetings, student work to form a trusting and cohesive team, practice Instant Challenges, brainstorm solutions, research information, write scripts, build and rebuild sets and props and rehearse their solutions for their Regional Tournament in March with the hopes of placing high enough to move on to the State competition in April. Teams scoring high enough at the State level will move on to the Global Final Competition in May where they compete with teams from all over the world in a fun filled week dedicated to creativity and competition.
The 2015-2016 season was the second year our school has participated and was amazing for our CCA teams. The teams competed and showcased their solutions to appraisers along with the other teams from across the region and placed 1st for the Scientific Challenge and 2nd for the Fine Arts Challenge at the Regional Tournament! This allowed both our teams to compete at the State Level. At the State Tournament, our Fine Arts team placed 7th in the state and our Scientific team placed 2nd, earning them the right to compete at the Global Finals Competition. At Global Finals, our CCA team placed 28th out of 86 teams in the Team Challenge and 35th in the overall competition. They competed against the top teams from the US and 20 other countries.
